Network Pattern Recognition Project
ECAI has received a new grant of nearly $300,000 from the National Science Foundation for “Network Pattern Recognition Project.” Lewis Lancaster is the Principal Investigator and will work closely with Michael Buckland, Christos Faloutsos (Carnegie-Mellon), Tina Eliassi-Rad (Rutgers) and Timothy Tangherlini (UCLA). The purpose of the project is to explore the feasibility of using network analysis and visual analysis techniques developed for very large science databases for very large humanities data sets. A november elejei pekingi GEO VII plenáris ülésen és miniszteri szintű találkozón mintegy 80 ország és közel 60 szakmai szervezet delegációja vesz részt.

Felkészülés a GEO Miniszteri Ülésére

A GEO genfi titkárságvezetője José Achache professzor mai levelében küldte meg a GEO soron következő miniszteri találkozójára tervezett Pekingi Nyilatkozat szövegtervezetét, melyet a nemzeti kapcsolattartók most az illetékes minisztereik számára kell, hogy megismertessenek véleményalkotás céljából.

Az alábbi vitaanyagot HUNAGI a GSDI globális térbeli adatinfrastruktúra szervezet levelezőjeként kapta kézhez.

A dokumentum tervezet (Draft Beijing Declaration 2010-09-01.pdf) ugyan nem publikus, de annak tartalmát a GEO MNB ismert tagjai (OMSZ, VM, MÜI, HUNAGI) számára hozzáférhetővé teszi annak érdekében, hogy a magyar felkészülést ezzel is elősegítse.

Nemzetközi Térinformatikai Társaság

Geospatial Society Information

A nemzetközi társaság tavaly alakult a GSDI szervezet egyéni tagokat tömörítő szervezeteként. Két hazai alapító tagja van. Elnöke argentin. HUNAGI bátorítja tagságát s partnereit, hogy akik a szakma nemzetközi kapcsolatai iránt személy szerint is érdeklődnek, egyénileg lépjenek be a társaságba. Az alábbiak a szervezet célját és tevékenységét foglalják össze:
"The International Geospatial Society is the individual membership arm of the GSDI Association and seeks individuals for membership that have geospatial, SDI, GIS or related professional or specialist interests. The Society intends to engage and enhance communications globally among individuals that are actively involved in promoting, developing, or advancing spatial data infrastructure and related concepts.

GSDI stratégiai együttműködése tervezése

A GSDI nemzetközi stratégiai kapcsolatalakítása területén számít a szervezet előző elnöke, a Holland Kataszter nemzetközi igazgatója a HUNAGI főtitkára közreműködésére. A megkeresésre ma délután, Skype megbeszélés keretében került sor. A GSDI négytagú végrehajtó bizottsága (ügyvezető igazgató Prof. Harlan Onsrud, Egyesült Államok), volt elnök (Prof. Bas Kok Hollandia), jelenlegi elnök (Prof. Abbas Rajabifard, Ausztrália) és megválasztottt soron következő elnök (Prof. David Coleman, Kanada) e heti ülésén ezt a kérdést is megvitatja. A figyelem várhatóan elsősorban - de nem kizárólag - a GEO/GEOSS, ISDE, CEOS WGISS és UNGIWG/UN SPIDER kapcsolatokra irányul.

GEO/GEOSS munkatervi információkezelő rendszer állt üzembe

José Achache titkárságvezető írta tegnapi levelében:
"...It is our pleasure to announce the official launch of the interactive GEO Work Plan Information Management System.
Accessible on-line, this web-based system offers various browsing and querying capabilities to retrieve information from and contribute information to the Work Plan. This tool will allow users to search across all of the Task Sheets to collate information on a particular organization, country or theme. It will also allow Task contributors to access, exchange and report information relating to the GEO Work Plan. In this way, it supports Task implementation and promotes the flow of information both within and between Task teams.
The Work Plan Information Management System also introduces interactive Task Sheet “pages". Task Sheet pages propose an overview of planned and produced outputs along with a direct link to the GEO 2010 Schedule for Work Plan Reporting and GEO Committee Meetings (attached).
These pages will be updated over time to feature information about latest progress, including supporting documents, presentations and links to external web sites.
The Information Management System will further develop to include the following features:
- Extraction of information across the Work Plan and Task Sheets;
- Export of on-line queries to Word documents;
-  One-click viewing of Task inter-relationships;
- Direct links to Task discussion list-serves.
New features will be gradually added - building upon feedbacks, inputs and comments received from the GEO community. To begin with a new monitoring tool, built upon the legacy of the GEOSS Road Map by Japan, will be integrated to the system. This tool will track the relationship between Tasks, sub-tasks and the GEOSS Strategic Targets.

ECAI legfrissebb hírei

Mai postánkból. HUNAGI 2007 tavasza óta tagja az Elektronikus Kulturális Atlasz Kezdeményezés intézményi hálózatának, amely a földrajz, kultúrák, a történelemtudomány és a térinformatika sajátos interdiszciplináris kutató műhelye. Ösztönzésére fiatal hazai kutatók és intézményeik is csatlakoztak a kezdeményezéshez. Az ECAI szervezet elnöki beszámolója :

New Developments
New ECAI Meeting Policy
A new ECAI meeting policy was agreed at the joint meeting of the ECAI
Executive and Institutional Committees at the ECAI/CAA joint conference at
Williamsburg on 24 March.
It was agreed that ECAI would change its policy to give a higher priority
to ECAI-flavored sessions at conferences of other organizations, to
specialized and local ECAI meetings, to "camps" (informal meetings of
experts), and to workshops and a lower priority to separate ECAI
conferences, even when joint with other conferences. It was recognized
that maintaining two ECAI conferences a year has been important for
building an ECAI community. However, this revised strategy would probably
be more effective in achieving ECAI's mission.
Funding
**The Shung Ye Museum in Taiwan has made an initial gift of $5,000 as part
of support for the preparation of a book of social changes in Taiwan since
the lifting of martial law in 1987. The book will be compiled and edited
by David Blundell and Michael Buckland.
For the workshop in India focusing on Remote Sensing, we received a grant
of $24,000 from the National Science Foundation to cover travel, housing,
and publication of the conference papers.
The University of California Berkeley Shung Ye Museum of Formosan
Aborigines Endowment Fund has awarded ECAI a sixth grant to support the
work of the ECAI Austronesia Team. $10,000 with be used for Phase III of
"Orchid Island (Lan-yu) and the Batanes: A Cultural Atlas of Languages and
Cultures" being undertaken by David Blundell, Michael Buckland and
Jeanette Zerneke.
Future Meetings
The ECAI/PNC conference and workshops will be held October 20-24 in Seoul
Korea joint with the VSMM 2010 Conference. We will be sending more
information to the affiliates after January.
2009 Workshops
(1) In keeping with the mandate that we move our efforts into workshops,
we had a successful collaboration with the Third International Conference
on Remote Sensing in Archaeology on 17th - 21st August 2009,
Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India (near Chennai).

The IIIrd International Conference was organized jointly by Bharathidasan
University, Tiruchirappalli, the University of California, Merced and
Berkeley, the University of Siena (Italy) and the REACH Foundation,
Chennai. The conference dealt with a wide range of perspectives, approaches and
issues on the use of remote sensing and digital technologies in
documenting, analyzing and interpreting archaeological and anthropological
contexts.
We were pleased to have the Minister of Cultural Affairs of India give the
keynote address. At the conclusion of the meeting, we forwarded to him a
statement from the members of the meeting, advocating some form of
cultural atlas work to provide for heritage site
identification and preservation. ECAI will be working to initiate this
proposal with an Atlas of Buddhist Archaeological Sites of Tamil Nadu and
Andre Pradesh. A team of scholars and researchers are forming with Dr.
Eric Kansa from the School of Information at Berkeley heading up the
effort.
(2) ECAI staff and members then held a second workshop at Pondicherry,
India, with the Ecole Francaise d'extreme orient, August 23-25, 2009. This
was an invitational workshop dealing with the input of Sanskrit materials
and the methods of handling Sanskrit manuscripts. We hope to give support
to the University of the West in its efforts to make a
large dataset of digital Buddhist Sanskrit texts. Our staff will also
continue to explore ways of cooperating with the EFEO team at Pondicherry.
(3) After five years of work on the Atlas of Chinese Religions with the
recent collaboration with the GIS Center of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, we
held a "Beta Test" workshop for the current state of the atlas interface.
Hosted by Professor Fan I-chun, head of the GIS Center, 18 participants
had a day-long session working with the interface and evaluating its
strengths and problems. Participants came from Taiwan, U.S., India, U.K.
and Russia.
After the workshop, the group made a report on the results to the PNC
meeting and the "GIS in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2009
International Conference," 7 - 9 October 2009.
*(4) The Director has been co-organizer with Professor Philip Stanley for
the workshop at the United Nations Day of Vesak meeting in Bangkok May 2-6
on: "Constructing a Digital Catalog for Buddhists Texts." The workshop
brought together more than 30 scholars who represent major input and
translation projects around the world. There is a continuing
effort from this workshop to construct the new digital catalogue.
ECAI was represented by the Director at the Second World Buddhist Forum
held in Wuxi and Taipei in April.
Recent Meetings
The Association of Asian Studies conference in Chicago featured a joint
ECAI / TELDAP panel session on March 28, 2009. The theme was
"Digitization -- Paradigm Shift for Asia Studies." The session, chaired by
Prof. Ruth Mostern (University of California at Merced, USA)
included papers by Dr. Simon C. Lin (Academia Sinica Grid Computing
Centre, Taiwan), Dr. I-chun Fan (Institute of History & Philology,
Academia Sinica, Taiwan), Dr. Karl Ryavec (University of Wisconsin, USA),
Dr. Peng-shan Chiu (Institute of History & Philology, Academia Sinica,
Taiwan), and Dr. Jiang Wu (University of Arizona, USA). Details are at

About the Program
The program for the 2008 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings will include
approximately 20-22 concurrent sessions. Each session will last 100
minutes and could have 3-4 speakers. Formats for sessions will be panel,
presentation, small group or a combination. Session coordinators are
responsible for determining the format.


Session Submission
Session/ panel proposals should include 3-4 papers, and the name of a
chair, discussant,
and contact person. Please submit ECAI proposals directly to Dashielle
Vawter – DashielleDV@berkeley.edu. The deadline for submitting session
proposals is 1 July, 2008.

Paper Submission
Abstracts for individual papers and poster/demo presentations should be
250-300 words. We will be accepting these submissions throughout the
summer.

Personalized – GIS Services
PEGASUS
Strategic objectives addressed
The objective of the project is to develop advanced network architecture, services, products, content processing and management techniques to facilitate advanced map usage and personalized and situation based search of geographical data, services and products within all different environments (including mobile). The project addresses the heart of the content + objectives and tackles the key domain that is necessary to provide the enabling technologies for personalised access to maps and GIS services and system. The implementation of these services will have a major impact in the EU and will enhance the E-content + objectives.
We will provide advanced solutions for organising, searching and accessing large-scale, distributed GIS content and objects. Our project is clearly innovative and will lead to a new level of assistive, search and retrieval services and products as well as a new user’s experience. The PEGASUS project will bring GIS services to fields where those services have not been implemented. Our projects will extend areas where map based services can have meaningful and feasible usage. The PEGASUS project will significantly advance research capabilities simultaneously consolidating existing research work. Our proposal clearly identifies and addresses future development in the field.
Our focus are technologies that support the process of representing and interpreting, navigating and retrieving maps and other types of maps related objects. Our aim is to provide industry and research community with a new metadata standard and set of procedures that will allow integrating of various heterogeneous and until now not compatible data sets (information). Simultaneously our metalanguage will allow the same geographical information (mostly represented through maps) to change instantly visual appearance depending on the type of visual presentation system or information that is needed. We do not just include heterogeneous data fusion and optimised system integration but we also introduce new technologies and visual presentation principles for the mobile environment.
Our project will simultaneously help to methods and tools aimed at higher levels of information harvesting, including automated knowledge discovery, extraction, annotation, summarisation, indexing and retrieval of all types of GIS content including 3D.

We propose an integrated autonomous agent based system that will organise, search and access digital maps, different GIS content and objects from different applications (not related to the present GIS systems) based on the user’s needs, actions, reactions and behaviour. Our integrated system will work with distributed and local GIS content and objects. Our project addresses relevant national and international standards (established and envisaged), policies and initiatives. The main advantage of our proposal is that it will provide personalized and user based (intuitive) GIS based services for different (not “directly GIS related”) applications and needs. Our project brings together expertise from a wide range of disciplines with the goal of proposing standards and methodologies and developing metastandard, metalanguage, software, tools and services that can facilitate different not gis oriented but GIS served search and retrieval criteria. By defining advanced system architecture, the project will enable on the fly content insertion and instantaneous context variations that will take into account user’s demand, profile, content availability and end device. The project will be capable of providing personalized (user and device) services and information to a tremendous range of end-users in a real environment.

The PEGASUS project lies in the general context of GIS, multimedia data processing, human-computer interaction and affective computing, all topics currently receiving significant interest at the national and international levels. One of the goals of this project is to design a framework for information-based access to GIS content, specifically maps, which will be based on user’s needs and environment. Separate part of the project will define an agent capable to “understand” user’s behaviour and to determine user’s specific needs for map presentation. The set of individual reactions will first be learnt from a selected set of the respective reactions presented to a user. These reactions will then constitute individual user profiles describing the user’s preferences corresponding to intrinsic or to semantic characteristics of the information. The knowledge of these preferences will permit the design of truly individually tailored data management tools; these will be integrated into a concrete platform for reaction-based access and summarization of information.

Objectives
The resulting system will serve to integrate services and networks into an everyday environments whilst ensuring that the individual remains in control but with the cognitive burden offset through the anticipation of user needs.

Az Európai térinformatikai ernyőszervezet tagországainak második éves találkozója

EUROGI tagországok és tagszervezetek napja Prágában
Évente az Európai Térinformatikai Ernyőszervezet két tagországok napja fórumot szervez. Az első az éves tavaszi közgyülés előtt kerül megrendezésre, a másodikra önálló eseményként valamelyik EUROGI tagszervezet ad otthont. 2004-ben Olaszország, 2005-ben Ausztria volt a házigazdája a tagok második éves fórumának, amely most már hagyományosan az INSPIRE felkészültségről ad számot. Ez évben november 23-25 között cseh társszervezetünk a CAGI lesz házigazdája az eseménynek. A Téradat-infrastruktúra világszervezet telefonos igazgatótanácsi ülése: gyújtópontban a GSDI-9
Az év negyedik telekonferenciáját tartják a GSDI szervezet igazgatótanácsi tagjai közép-európai idő szerint 2006. október 11-én délután. Az igazgatói testületben székkel rendelkezik a HUNAGI, egyben jelenleg a testület titkári funkcióját is ellátjuk. Novembertől két évig a szervezet elnöke is európai lesz Jarmo Ratia személyében, aki a finn Földmérési szervezet elnöke.
